3M Tape

Postby Jiml » Wed Apr 18, 2012 9:36 pm

I often see references to the use of "3M" tape to protect frames from damage to the finish. What 3M product are you using and where can you buy it? Where is the tape most often applied - down tube, chain, and seat stays?

Thanks

Apply it everywhere

I covered pretty much all of 2 of my frames with that $40 order.

I use this stuff to wrap the chainstays on bikes these days. Easier than recycling an old inner tube and seems to be more durable against mineral-oil based chain lubes, which would eat away at the rubber tube. It's stretchy rubber tape that only sticks to itself.

I've never used the clear 3M tape but have heard great things.

I just used some clear packing tape I had laying around the house and it seems to be working OK.

Me too. I use 2 layers in heavy-wear areas. Primarily, I use it to protect against cable rub.

I also use it for cable rub, something much thicker for chain slap.

I bought the 3 m helicopter tape off ebay. it is doing well. i think it is a little thicker than the packing tape and the glue is supposed to be easier on the paint of your bike. i wish i'd used it where all the cables exist on my frame-black anodized. now i have a few areas where nice shiny alum is poking through. looks like the black sharpy will have to come out. The tape has held up over several months and has weathered a lot of mud, rain and several washing without coming off.
