Chattahoochee Bend State Park

Postby bwick » Sat Jul 17, 2010 10:28 am

Anybody know who is responsible for building and coordinating these proposed trails? I'd like to see more miles than what is proposed, but will take what I can get.

Here is a link to a map of the proposed park.

Yes, we -- SORBA Atlanta-- are following it and TomS and WaltB are leads at present. If you're interested in helping and you live in that area, we need a lead close to the park. Let me know.

Thanks!

I haven't been to all the meetings but I've been to several and was the only person there that said anything about bike trails. This park has been in planning since 2005, the master plan has been approved and trail construction has started. http://www.times-herald.com/Local/First ... k--1123062

After I made the above post someone from sorba pm'ed me and I sent them all the contact info for the committee members but never heard anything back and as I mentioned before never had anyone else express interest in bike trails at the meetings.

Funding was also just approved for another new park in the area. This one has 8 miles of ... you guessed it horse trails slated to be built. I think the equestrians had the fix in on this one, the HOH groups weren't even at the planning meeting.

I'm working on getting better and current info but if you've been to meetings, let's please get together on a way forward. I'm not at all pleased with the answers I'm getting from our leadership, which is basically that we're not doing anything which puts us WAY behind the 8-ball on a brand new 2900 acre park.

Right now, there's about 4-5 guys who have an interest in these trails. Maybe we can all meet up soon and get that group working together with the 'Friends of' group on the upcoming trail work days at a very minimum. SORBA Atlanta will provide resources and such and will gladly get you guys to trail school ASAP if you're interested.

If so, let me know. sorba dot atlanta at gmail dot com. Or PM me. Hopefully I'll have more and better news within a couple days.

It's really sad, that of the 3 forms of travel for these trails, the farther your can travel per visit, the less amount of trails availible. Look at that map very few connector trails, and most hikers a 7 mile hike is an all day event. I want to get more involved, I have a strong back, and I will go to some meetings, but I am not good at the diplomecy stuff. I'm sorry but I am not willing to go waste my time on 2.5 mile of trail, that is useless to us. Is there any thing wrong with having horsies, bikes and hikers on the same trail? Really, can hikers not see, hear us coming, their out in the woods, be aware of your surroundings. Can Equestrian not train there horse's to not freak out with other trail users. I have seen the police horse's in Atlanta, so it can be done. Also do they not realize that MTB'rs dont mind paying for trail use or volunteering trail work, so we could help keep the park from being a parasite finacially.

There's a work party happening on 28AUG, 9am-1pm. This is NOT a SORBA work party but we should be participating.

Details here

And yes, we're actively working to get SORBA back in play with this project. Will keep ya posted.

Thanks!

Has there been anymore progress on mountain bike trails? My fiance and I were out there and we spoke with someone who said they are trying to get SORBA involved. We left our name and number at the office as willing volunteers to assist if need be. We know others in Coweta County who would be willing to help build the trails or do anything else as well. Please let me know if you all need anything or there are any other meetings concerning this project.

Thank you.

Scott,
Check your email. The time to get organized was actually two years ago but from what I was told last year (when I was ATL chapter president) was that SORBA main was waiting for something to happen and I was basically told for the chapter to stand down. In the meantime, the 'Friends of' group has been hosting monthly work parties and building hiking trails. I have no idea what the status of MTB riding is at the park. Hopefully we'll get an update from the leadership I copied on the email to you.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, just telling what I know.

Chattahoochee Bend mountain bike trails are a go!! We need volunteers to assist in the trail building as well as funds for equipment. Scott Rush, tsrush@charter.net, has formed a committee to build the trails. We were out there last weekend to scout the area they reserved for the trails and it is a great area for the first 3 mile loop with area left over for spurs. We really need SORBA's help to get this accomplished and make Georgia an awesome mountain bike destination. Chattahoochee Bend has great potential since there will be hiking and you can kayak or canoe on the river as well. We are planning to try and get spur that link to the campground as well. We NEED groups like this to support us and make the State know that this is a great idea.

Please contact Scott if you can help. He can also be reached at 678-637-5814. Immediately, we need help getting the initial 3 mile loops GPS coordinates mapped onto a topo map. Scott will be asking for volunteers with GPS units to help with that so once it is mapped it can be presented to the Park management for approval and then we can break ground. If we had funds for trail equipment that would be wonderful.

The state even has a parking area built with plumbing to set up a bike clean up area. We need your help to do the rest!!

Thank you all.

There has been some movement on these trails after a years hiatus. There is a small group that has started working on this project. We have the trail marked and are waiting on the DNR for approval to move forward.
