I'm not buying that the range is enough with a 30T up front. I spin out on a 32:11 on many down hills. I'd want bigger than that up front, and I'm not sure that would work with the 42 in the back to get low enough on the climbs. I think the 2x10 is probably the minimum for an all mountain or race setup, at least for most mortals.
