Jacksonville, Florida mountain bikers recently enjoyed a historic day, signing the first agreement between area mountain bikers and the City of Jacksonville. On Monday, May 23 SORBA-Jax signed a Friends of Hanna Park agreement that allows the chapter to work on several projects with the City:
- Signage--install signs on existing biking and hiking trails in Hanna Park. Currently few signs exist to mark the trails and trail directions. Nearly 100 signs will be installed over the trail system. The City of Jacksonville will cover the costs, materials, and labor required to create and install the signs. SORBA-Jax is providing a plan to the City to show what each sign should say and where each sign should be placed.
- Construction--replace a missing bridge on the Z-Trail. The bridge was removed in the summer of 2010 and never replaced. Stagnant water standing in the canal has kept this section of trail closed for several months. SORBA-Jax is currently drawing up plans to replace the bridge per City specs.
- Maintenance--allows SORBA-Jax to perform basic trail maintenance on a routine basis without having to file for a special use permit every time the trails need work.
The process of obtaining this Friends of the Park agreement has taken nearly a year, and SORBA-Jax is proud of the relationship they have developed with the City of Jacksonville.
