This years Women’s MTB Day on May 1st was celebrated by a number of chapters all across the region. This event was created by IMBA to celebrate the women rider and support their pursuit of mountain biking. This year we reached out to a few of our chapters that hosted events to highlight the activities they included.

CAMP (Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers)

Eleven ladies came out to celebrate with the CAMP Vixens Women’s group hitting some of the first purpose built mountain bike trials created by CAMP at Chewacla State Park. Many of these women have been riding together since 2015 when the Vixens group first started. A few riders were new to the group coming out just in recognition of Women’s MTB Day. Skill levels and ages of riders were various, but they all had one thing in common; a love for mountain biking and the great outdoors.

In addition to group rides twice a month, the CAMP Vixens have hosted several women’s only skills clinics as well as events to support women’s specific causes such as breast cancer. Many thanks to CAMP and Chewalca for creating an amazing trail system open to so many riders and an opportunity to introduce new people to the sport of mountain biking.

HAMR (Huntsville Area Mountain Bike Riders)

The Huntsville Area Mountain bike Riders (HAMR) chapter celebrated Women’s MTB Day at Monte Sano State Park on a gorgeous May Day Saturday!  Our afternoon started with the HAMR board all pitching in to cook burgers, brats, and provide sides for over a dozen ladies.  Then we covered some basic trail etiquette and fundamental mountain biking basics (throwing in a prize or two for correct answers donated by the local bike shop community) before heading out for a green trails spin.  We had several first-time riders who conquered the ride and left smiling!  After our green trails spin, the group split up for the second half of the day: shuttles driven by our fabulous board volunteers!  Again, we had ladies who tackled some new-to-them trails and enjoyed the camaraderie of building skills with other ladies.  We wrapped up with a few post-ride beverages and called it a fun, successful day supporting #morewomenonbikes!

Piedmont Fat Tire Society

Piedmont Fat Tire Society’s first-ever International Women’s MTB Day celebration was a huge success! Over 50 women from ages 9 to 60 came out to Bur-Mil Park to learn new skills, build confidence, and ride the trails. Expert volunteers led skills clinics, bike maintenance demos, and group rides. We could not have pulled this off without the support of our local bike shops who contributed tons of ride food and raffle items.
